It takes less than two hours by train so it would be an easy day trip.

Take a look at www.cie.ie and you will get what you seek. Enjoy.

Trains depart daily from Connolly station in Dublin - it's pretty central. Get there early and uit should take approx 2 hours to get there, so well within day trip distance. Better going to www.irishrail.ie for details (www.cie.ie is a website for a conglomerate of bus, rail and local buses, so might be a bit confusing). Currently costs from €35 return.

You can go by rail or bus, sometimes its easier to just phone CIE, as the website is not that informative, there are also private bus companies who put buses on.
Trains - Intercity passenger trains run between Dublin and Belfast and cities and towns throughout Ireland. Belfast and Dublin (Connolly Station) are linked by 8 trains daily in both directions (5 on Sundays). The 'Enterprise' express train takes a little under 2 hours. Standard fares are £23 / €33 one way and £33 / €48 round trip (valid one month). Cheap day returns are also available for £25 / €35 (except Fridays & Sundays).

Buses - Buses link towns and cities by conventient frequent service all across Ireland north & south.
Ulsterbus services operate from the Europa Bus Centre, Glengall Street and a Laganside Bus Station in Belfast. Irish Bus/Bus Eireann operate from the Busaras station in Dublin.

The Dublin - Belfast Express coach service operates 7 times daily Monday - Saturday and 5 times daily on Sunday. Fares are £13 / €18 one-way, £14.50 / €21 for a day return, £17.90 / €26 for a return ticket valid one month. Pick up and drops off at Dublin airport.

In the Republic of Ireland routes, timetables and price information can be obtained from:

Irish Rail - Iarnród Eireann

www.irishrail.ie

Hope this is of help to you.
