driving(we think) to Prague from Munich (vs train). Why drive?
We are driving most likely to Prague from Munich on July 12. Leaving from Munich early in the morn. Where would we stop along the way that would make the drive really interesting? I want to do more than look out of the window and see cool things pass by. We are returning to Frankfurt on Sat. morn. the 16th. Where can we stop on the way back from Prague to Frankfurt (leaving early) to get back for a 4 pm flight to US. Or...should we take the train?

Hi dm.
www.mappy.com and www.viamichelin.com have suggested routes off the main highways.
It's 4 hr Munich/Prague and 5:30 hr Prague/Frankfurt.
Train schedules are at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

The route shown on www.viamichelin.com takes you by way of Plzen (origin of the term "Pilsener", referring to beer), and I don't know anything about it. For only a modestly more time, you could go via Salzbug-> Linz, and then, Cesky Krumlov is on your way, and makes for a nice overnight, or conceivably, a decent 3-6 hour stop (if you left Munich early in the morning).
A car will be a millstone around your neck in Prague, for the most part, so the decision might boil down to how many are in your "we"? at four people, you might break even on car versus train (plan on $15-40 a night to park the car while it sits idle in Prague).
It's a 5.5 hr drive from Prague to Frankfurt - - if by "early", you mean, say... 5 am or earlier, then you could stop in Wurzburg, and see the Residenz, just to name one example. That assures that you are close to Frankfurt in case driving has some unexpected obstacle (flat tire, etc).
Of course, you need to be at the airport by 2 pm, or even a little earlier to turn in the car.
Best wishes,
Rex

It simply gets your message more visibility (as was my point when I started my post with "topping"
- - it was at position number "253" (or something like that) when I replied at 7:48 pm, drifting further and further towards "the bottom" (which is where all messages are headed) - - Fodor's "never" deletes any messages, other than offensive ones... "the bottom" is something like 200,000 messages "down there" now... in this ninth year of the forum)

I am driving Munich to Prague every week at present. I take the 93 in the direction of Regensburg but, if you have time to kill then it's nice to stop in Nurnberg for a few hours. From Nurnberg you stay on the motorway until a place called Wernberg Koblitz (take advantage of the rest stop as there is precious little after it until you get to the border and that can be up to an hour if traffic is slow). Once on the CZ side you've got a motorway all the way to Plzen. If you want to stop in Plzen, get off at the exit Borska Pole and then follow the main road until it takes you into the centre. If not stopping in Plzen, stay on the motorway and you'll go on the ring road (not quite finished). Also from munich is a route via Deggendorf but, it's an hour longer and brings you out close to Plzen. The last 5km into Prague can be confusing. Make sure you know exactly if you are going to use the "ostatni transit" or not. If low on fuel, stop at the "Rudna" services before entering the city.
Prague to Frankfurt leaving at 0500 with one stop would take me 5hrs 30 mins but, with time to kill, I agree with the suggestion to stop at Wurzburg.
When entering CZ remember to change money first then buy the 15 day motorway sticker for cz korun (Euros is 40% more expensive).
