Driving from Zurich to Vienna

First time exciting trip: land in Zurich, spend a couple of days and then drive to Vienna, spend about 4 days. Any advice appreciated about either destination and the drive in between!

How much time do you plan for the places in between? If you intend to drive straight through, I would rather recommend taking a train or flying.

Otherwise there is so much to see ain between - even along the straightforward route, not to mention detours - that you have to tell first what you want to see.

I just found out about this last night and quickly looked at the map. It looks to be about an 8 hour drive. We hadn't talked much about breaking it up into a couple of days but if there is that much to see along the way we certainly could. I think we want to get a good feel for where we are rather than push to see everything possible -- does that make sense? My sister, father and mother will be travelling with me -- father and mother very fit 80's. We are from the broad expanses of Texas so an 8 hour drive is really a normal affair for us. We love eating, hiking, boating and history. All in all I think we would rather have three or four really great stops planned along the way.

Will you be driving back to Zurich? If not, are you aware of the (often steep) additional drop-off charge for a one-way rentals across borders?

With 8 hours driving time (which is more an idealistic calculation which does not take into account any traffic jams) I don't think you will have enough time for 3-4 stops.

The possibility to drive thru the Alps might justify one night in between.

I had no idea that there were expensive drop off charges -- we may want to rethink this whole thing. What sort of train fare would we be looking at?

I can see that I am going to have to do a little more homework and then come back to all of you with questions when I know more about what I am doing. Thank you and I'll be back in a few days.

Excellent posting from both posters.

Think about Salzburg as a stopover. Lindau might also be nice too.

Air Austria often has very cheap flights between Zurich and Vienna. I have heard the drive is around 9 hours. Flying time about 1 hour.
