Drive from Zurich to Lugano

We are thinking about driving from Lugano to Zurich. Can anyone tell me if this is a scenic drive? Thanks!

Me too. I'll be going from Zurich to Lugano. Maybe it depends upon the time of the year?

I'm going in May. Budman, are you driving or taking the train?

If you are taking the highway? Not really - you will spend most of the time in tunnels or in the km-long traffic jam before the Gotthard tunnel portal. If you are driving in summer you can take the older pass road, which is quite scenic.

If you simply want to get from A to B take the train.

Besides going over the Gotthard, another scenic drive is to go over Oberalp and then Lukmanier. (Andermatt - Disentis - Biasca) VERY scenic. Used to do it a lot with the motorbikes.

Of course, this will take more time and you can only do it when the passes are open. May is probably too early although with our lack of snow this year, the passes might open earlier.

Schuler, how do you know if the passes are open? Is there a website to go to? Is a pass simply another road? Is there a toll to go on this?

Here's a website displaying current info regarding Swiss passes. Press the page numbers (below the red teletext) to go forward.

There are no tolls on our passes. Just wandering cows, sheep and lots of motorcycles. Nowadays you'll see a lot of bicyclists too.
