Driving from Tuscany to Rome airport

We have a noon flight out of Rome (Fiumicino) on a Sunday. We will be in staying in the Pienza/Montepulciano area the night before and will have a rental car. Presumably we will have to leave for the airport quite early (maybe 5 am)? How is the drive to Rome? How much time should we budget?
Would it just be much smarter to stay in Rome for 1 night the previous night?

What time is your flight?
If before 11:00 I would not try it. The GRA during rush hour can be brutal. I would allow 2.5 hours for the drive--plus the drop--plus getting into the terminal---you will need 3 hours plus.

We have the same dilema, we are staying close to Grosetto and have an 11:00 flight on Saturday. We are dropping the rental off at the airport on Friday and spending the night in Rome so we won't be so rushed.
