Driving from Rome to Positano
I haven't seen any recent forums discussing renting a car in Rome and driving to Positano and wondering what experiences people have had? Specifically, are we crazy to drive?! We will need to stop on the way - maybe Pompeii?
We have rented a villa in Positano and will be staying there for 5 days. We plan to go to Capri one day, maybe Paestum and Ravello/Amalfi another. Is it useful to have a car?
Thanks in advance for your help!

We found the drive to be pleasant. When you get to the penninsula the road is very curvy and slow, and breathtakingly beautiful.
Our only problem was that we arrived that day and the drive was more than anticipated after an overnight flight.

The drive is 175 miles and takes about three and a half to 4 hours. It's not a difficult autostrada drive.
You'll find a car very useful to visit the Amalfi coast towns and if you're going this month you won't find it that busy.

Our flight is also overnight so I was worried about that. We have 4 adults so hopefully it won't be that bad. We are going this month - actually this Friday! Very last minute trip!
Do you recommend we stop somewhere on the way?

We drove from Rome to Sorrento and it took us about 3 hours. The only difficulty we had was getting out of Rome and onto the right road to the Amalfi area. If you have a GPS, that would make things a lot easier.
Is your villa in Positano near the city center? If so, you wouldn't need a car because public transportation and ferries will get you anywhere you need to go. It's not easy to navigate around the Amalfi Coast because parking is difficult to find. Does your villa have a spot for you to park your car? We are going there next spring and this time we aren't renting a car as our villa is in Positano in the city center.
