Driving from Rome to Perugia/Assisi?

We will be staying in Rome and am wondering if we could get any info about driving to Assisi and Perugia? How long does it take? And or should we take the train and rent a car one way? We would really like to see things on our own time, however if its not worth the day trip to rent we will take the train both ways? Any other ideas about car rentals to close by areas of Rome. We only would like quickies and will use Rome as out base. Thanks.

driving in an dout of rome is a complete nightmare. you will be miserable. use assisi as your base, tarin into rome, pend a few nights then get car back in assisi and drive from town to town from there. you will not want to be driving in and out of rome. it makes nyc and boston look easy. good luck and enjoy the countryside. you will love it.
