dricving time Rome Airport or Civitavecchia to Bologna
Hoping to find a car rental agency at Port at Civitavecchia after we finish our cruise in may 2011, if not then we will probably have to pick one up at the airport. How far of a drive is it to Bologna from either airport or the port?

You can use online map-routing websites like ViaMichelin or Mappy or Google to get driving routes.
You can also use AutoEurope to find out about renting a car in Civitavecchia on your day of arrival. I doubt you need to go to Rome airport to pick up a car.
Bologna is very well served by trains, and it not a great place to drive or park a car. (Not impossible, just not much fun.) If you are going directly to Bologna from Civitavechhia, as opposed to taking a few days to wander scenically with a car through central Italy, consider getting yourself to Rome's Termini station and taking the train to Bologna from there. If you need a car after that, it is easy to rent one in Bologna (although sightseeing in Emilia-Romagna is largely possible using trains alone).

seat61.com/italy regional trains your cheapest best bet...
www.orvieto.info or Pisa Florence Bologna if u want to
Skip Rome which I usually do...
Rental cars tigercarrental.com more expensive out of FCO
more cost and liability in big cities.

qwovadis is a troll who posts misleading information, mainly directed at Italian travelers, in order to tie them up in chasing down meaningless tips in their planning and that would snafu their vacations if they actually followed the cryptic "advice"
You can look at the kind of reviews "tiger car rentals" gets:

Taking regional trains to Bologna in lieu of renting a car would be absurd.

I agree, since you appear to want to go straight to Bologna there is no reason to drive. It will take forever, believe me!! Just take the train.
It occurs to me you may be disembarking from the ship with a lot of luggage. Is that correct? Perhaps you need to consider paring down what you take with you so you can get onto the train more easily.

thanks for all the tips. we might consider taking train to Bologna and then picking up car for traveling around and finally to Venice. we do like to travel at our own pace and stop if we feel like it which you can't do if traveling by train. Luggage, we travel light even on ship so that is not a problem.....
