Dress in London summer?
Hi,
Will be first timer to London in late July. I wanna know whether I can wear shorts into major museums or churches. Or it's not hot at all in London so I don't have to bother.
Also, any Internet cafe around High street (kensington) tube station?
Thanks!

I lived in London for a semester, but not during the July. It did get hot enough in June to wear dresses/shorts and be comfy. I'm pretty sure you're allowed to wear shorts in museums/churches, and that you won't look a fool doing so.
I actually lived right near Kensington, and there was an internet cafe right by there. It was on the main street when you exit the tube. (this was 2000). I LOVE London, have a blast!! If you're into this kind of thing, I loved the Tower of London and have tea at Kensington Palace! Those were two of the best "touristy" things I did. The museums and theater are also great of course.

My dear, I live in London it's a large city you can walk around naked in fact - women cannot be arrested for public indecency if they are naked, this is a law only applicable to men.
Taking this as your basis - wear shorts, wear skirts that are narrower than belts, wear hotpants wear the tiniest of boob tubes, you won't offend anyone.

Why on earth would you expect museums to have a dress code? Do they have them in your country? Do they have them anywhere?
And no, churches here absolutely do NOT have a dress code, either for visiting or for worshipping. On the rare occasions it's hot enough, I and many of the congregation attend full three-priest, incense and biretta, Latin High Mass in my shorts. Somehow,we rather suspect God has other things on Her mind than how we choose to dress.

don't know where you;re coming from but hot weather in London in the summer (and by this I mean hot weather like you get in New York) is fairly rare. It can be a little warm, or hunid but temps in the high 80's or 90's are uncommon. I would not bother with shorts - you're much more likely to need a sweater.

Check weather.com regarding what the 10-day forecast will be, you may not have to worry about shorts at all. But London is really casual.
I don't know specifics re: High Street Internet cafes, but London is pretty well saturated with them in bottle shaped by the Circle-line's Underground route and High Street-Kens is within that area. We stayed in South Kens and there were two right across from our hotel, just a block from the tube stop.

If the temps are warm, you will see people in shorts. We just returned fro London and temps were pretty cool. We were comfortable in slacks.
Yes, there is an EasyInternet cafe just across the street from the HSK tube station. You get about 30 minutes for £1. There is also a lot of nice shopping along the street. We stay just off Kensington High Street when we're in London. It's a nice location.
Also, the #9 bus route is a very convenient from there.

jz166, I thought you asked some great questions. I too am leaving for London for the first time and had wondered what to pack due to the horrible heat they had last year. I've been watching the temps and speaking with friends there and they are saying it is cool and they don't expect the heat like they had last year. I'm not sure where you're from but I'm in California and dealing with 90 degree weather so shorts automatically came to mind. However, we are now being told to bring slacks, jeans. The only place we were advised not to try to go to in shorts or jeans was Harrods. As far as churches I can understand your concern. Some churches here in the U.S. discourage people coming in jeans or shorts. Luckily, my church could care less...God doesn't care what you wear otherwise we would have been born with clothes on. Visiting other countries is really great and for the person that commented on being a question for a person that isn't ready to travel internationally..poo! If you've ever traveled to Mexico you wouldn't be allowed in shorts to most of their churches. So, I'd rather ask and start off right! Hope you have a great trip too!

Can I try to inject a little light rather than heat into the shorts question?
I worked at a university in the US and noticed that there shorts were the summer "uniform". You saw legs on fatter and older people that in the UK would be covered up and nobody bothered.
Heaven help us, you see some sorry sights in the UK in the summer, but on ther whole you see fewer old/overweight folk wearing shorts.
That said, we can take people with purple hair, nose rings etc. in our stride, so a few strangely dressed tourists won't startle us.

Anything really does go in London - you would be hard pressed to stand out from the crowd!
By all means bring shorts, but I would recommend packing for summer and autumn - you never can tell over here. Temp reached 98 degreeds C last summer but right now its in the 60's with showeres forecast for the rest on the week.
We have had a few weeks of less than summery weather so we are due some sun and warmth I reckon by the end of July. Just MO!
People wear shorts in my church - and as for museums - no problem.
Enjoy your trip.

My brother in law is living there right now and said the whether last week was all over the board. Hot one minute, then all of a sudden windy and rainy, showers the next, then sunny again. So I would recommend layering... even if you wear shorts bring a sweater with you and an umbrella.
I never bring shorts on my travels, mostly because my white legs would blind or at least scare many... instead I bring some skirts that I can wear with bare legs. They pack lighter.
Whatever you wear, nobody is going to care or say, "hey there goes a tourist." I was at the Louvre a few years ago when they were having a horrible heat wave and remember seeing many people in shorts of all nationalities. That said, I do think that shorts in a church are just tacky... maybe it's my parochial upbringing.
