I would appreciate any input (good or bad) on these Pensions that we are considering. We will train to Dresden on Thursday - 13-8-09 and then train to Prague on Saturday 15-8-09. We are two mature ladies that love gardens. We hope to see museums, castles and just sit and take in the fact that we are in Germany.

My wife and I found the Hotel Burgk to be quite comfortable, quiet, spotless, and included a fine breakfast. We stayed there three nights in early June, 2009. It's a 10-minute tram ride to the center of the old city. On a day trip, we drove southeast up the Elbe River to Pillnitz Castle. Very interesting, beautiful gardens and grounds. Then on to the town of Sebnitz where we had a fine lunch. Then drove back along the Elbe to Dresden. We found and booked Hotel Burgk through the internet. English spoken.

aparthotels frauenkirche would be the most centrally located. Be prepared that Münzgasse is a small alley with a lot of restaurants that tend to be busy until late at night - noise can be a problem if you want to leave the windows open. If I recall correctly some apartments there are in need of renovation, others were renovated recently. Please ask before booking.

Pension Reiche is quite a bit outside the city centre. Tram connection is very good, though. I recall one Fodorite enjoyed his stay there.

Hexenhaus is IMO a bit too far outside. Public transportation is not very good to/from there.

Pension Andreas would be my first choice. Nice residential area, very good connections to the city centre and to the very nice areas around the Blue Wonder Bridge.

Hotel Burgk is also a good option. Probably a bit more expensive than Pension Andreas or Pension Reiche I think.

USNR, you didn't really go to Sebnitz, did you? LOL, that's the small town where my mother comes from and I grew up a few miles from there. You're probably the second American ever going there (besides my American friens).

Near the college,good access to public transportation, fabulous breakfast, large rooms and English is spoken. One possible drawback is no lift, only stairs. Reminded me of a American style bed and breakfast.

I suggest the hostel Jugendgästehaus Dresden. Lonely Planet's "Europe on a Shoestring" recommends it. I stayed there three years ago. My room had three beds but I was the only occupant. The buffet breakfast is complete. The bathroom was enormous. Clean and modern. It is a short tram ride from the station. Go left on the tram from the station. Ingo! Yes! We had lunch in Sebnitz, just off the central square, Hotel Sebnitzer Hof, on the second floor in the August der Starke dining room. Absolutely fabulous food, beautiful dining room, splendid service. Spargel (of course), steak, beer.

I have booked one twin bed room for the 13-8 and 14-8 at Pension Andreas for 70Euro a night. If Ingo recommends it, it must be good. I hope to report when we get back in September.

I am sure you'll like it. One other thought: The weekend you'll be in Dresden is the time when the Stadtfest (city festival) takes place. Lots of stuff and party especially in the old town. Wise decision not to stay at Apartments an der Frauenkirche!
