We traveled by train from Barcelona to Toulouse, rented a car, and drove to the Dordogne, then drove to Limoges and took train to Paris. If you were going to the Dordogne Valley area, that would be a good route, but would not, of course take to Bordeaux. Limoges has a very fast train from Paris and then is a short drive south.

I don't think you could do better for location or charm or price.
See lots of caves, and drive around to see the countryside. Each town is so beautiful.
