Buona sera Dona, Good to see you again. We too will be in Venice soon--to arrive on 3 Oct. for a week. Then, off to Slovenia. Your itinerary sounds great. Good luck !

Bob -

We'll probably cross paths - I'll be in Venice from 10/7 - 10/9 - then off to Asolo, from which I hope to go to Trieste...

I'll look for the guy with the large camera around his neck [that is what you said, no??]... Have a great trip.

BTW - what are your favorite restaurants in Venice?

Dona

Have you looked at Siena? It's easily doable as a day trip from Florence. You may not want to leave, however.

Dona, I was recently in Aquileia, about an hour outside of Venice on the way to Trieste. Incredible Roman site and a basilica with the largest intact mosaic floor in Europe. This is now one of my top five favorite built environments in Italy. We stayed in Grado, an island resort city. No Herald Tribune to be found on the island but every major German and Eastern European newspaper you can think of.

About 6 weeks ago, someone wrote a lovely personal essay in either the NY Times or the Washington Post on Trieste. Sorry, this is the only information I have since I didn't save the article, but if you are interested you could do a search.

Aquileia has a wonderful web site. We spent the night at Grado a couple of years ago and very much enjoyed the trip to Aquileia.

Also we atayed at Hotel Duse in Asolo and ate at Due Mori restaurant across the piazza. It is very nice- run by a very cheerful red haired lady. You can watch the meat cooked over a large open grill. You can eat on a terrace overlooking the countryside if the weather is warm enough. I think the Due Mori also has rooms where you can stay. If you get the chance , could you ask them about rooms and see how much they are. We are planning a trip there in the spring with a couple of our young adult children. They are looking for inexpensive places to stay. There is a website for the commune of Asolo.
