Does Stonehenge really deserve it's popularity?

I thought I would hate Stonehenge for all the reasons haters typically hate Stonehenge, but I loved it. I did go in the dead of winter-- two days before solstice, and it was snowing on our way there so perhaps that added to the "magical" feel, plus it was so cold that there were very few people there, but it did indeed feel magical to me. I am from the US where there are large, intrusive buildings associated with any and all points of interest so I kinda appreciated that the little center at Stonehenge was small enough that it didn't detract from the countryside unnecessarily. I knew enough about the background of the stones from the tour we had on the way up and from prior knowledge that I didn't feel unprepared or underserved when I got there. To be honest, in my short one week stay in the UK I became so overwhelmed by constant audio tours and placards that by the last days I was just looking at things and trying to have a reaction to them rather than trying to learn every little bit about them, if that makes sense. We did the audio tour and then the bus was there to pick us up, but we elected to stay for another cycle just to enjoy the stones without the intrusion of the audio tour, which was very informative but also distracting. I really didn't have a problem with the stones being behind ropes; not sure why, perhaps since I am not from the UK I didn't feel I had any right to be among them. I am also a big Hardy fan so I suppose the stones had some literary significance to me as well.
