Does anyone know the current situation in Naples?
We were planning to stop in Naples on our way to Pompeii but I read recently that Naples is having a garbage strike of some sort and the garbage is piled high in the streets and people are setting fire to it. Did the US State Department issue a warning on travel to Naples for health reasons? I checked the web site but could not find the warning.

I typed in "Naples Garbage" in the search field and found this. Updated as of 7/2/07:

The government (not the garbage collectors) has started removing garbage from the heavily touristed areas like Positano, Amalfi, Capri, and Pompeii. But Neopolitans are still burning trash so if you venture into Naples itself, it could be smoky.

This talk about garbage in Naples has been going on for a while. We were there on June 21/22 and as of then it was as normal as it can be for a generally dirty city. Nothing critical. I wouldn't change my travel plans because of that. Has it become worse since then? I don't know.

This was in a trip report posted today:
We found the drive out of Naples to be quite off-putting because there was trash everywhere. It was piled on the sidewalks and overflowing into the streets. (Since we have been home we learned that no trash was being picked up due to the landfill being full?!) However, we were soon heading up the coast and the views became more and more beautiful.
