Naples for five days???

I have 5 nights to fill in my summer trip to italy, and i can use starwood points to stay the the excelsior in naples.

1. Is five nights too much there? I figure I can do a few side trips - capri, amalfi, pompeii?

Any comments on Naples or the Excelsior would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Coachboy

I spent 7 nights at the Excelsior in Naples and ran out of time: needed one more week. Here are some things to plan:

I. Naples itself: Museo Archeologico, Museo di Capodimonte, Museo di San Martino and Castel Sant'Elmo, major churches, Palazzo Reale, Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino), Spaccanapoli District, Via Partenope/Santa Lucia District, Mergellina District
II. Naples environs: Cumae, Baia, Bacoli, Pozzuoli (all four in the Campi Flegrei), Ercolano, Pompei, Sorrento and Sorrentine Peninsula, Capri, Ischia, Procida, Caserta (Reggia)
III. Further afield: Amalfi Coast, including Positano, Amalfi and Ravello

Don't even try to do all these in five days!
Concerning the Hotel Excelsior itself, it is a wonderful place to stay. The buffet breakfast is on the roof terrace, with nice views of the Bay. There are many good restaurants in the immediate vicinity. Rooms facing the Bay can be noisy, but they also have beautiful rooms facing the side street in the back of the property.

It is a short train ride to Sorento and Pompeii from Naples.

The isle of Capri is reachable by ferries and hydrofoils leaving from Naples and Sorrento.

Capri is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Naples by ferry or 45 minutes by hydrofoil, and it costs about $5 for the ferry and $9 for the hydrofoil (each way).

I would not spend more than a day or two in Naples.

My wife and I spent a week in Naples and had so much fun there that we did not leave the city for planned day trips to amalfi, etc. The city is dynamic and fascinating. We are going back for another 2 weeks minimum.

Different strokes for different folks. We found 2 days in Naples to more than ample. It's a bustling place, somewhat gritty here and there, but, compared to other destinations in the country, its attractions don't measure up for someone who has spent a pile of money to get to Italy. I can get a bustling, gritty city experience without going all the way across the Atlantic. Naples is a fine, interesting place to visit, but not to spen a lot of time compared to Rome, Florence, the Amalfi Coast, Venice, the lake country, etc.
