Does anyone know how to locate a lost penpal from many years ago?
I know this is a travel site and this is sort of a travel question. I had a penpal when I was much younger from Northampton, England. I have lost all of the letters so I only have her name and the town she lived in when we corresponded. I would like to contact her again and hopefully on my next trip to England meet with her if she is still alive. We wrote each other for about 4 years and the last time was around 1969. If anyone has any ideas to help me out, I would appreciate a website to go to. Thanks

A few ideas:

Search in online telephone directories (if you don't know a site for UK directories let us know and we can find some and post them)

Do a name search on good search engines like Google or Profusion

If you know where she went to university, possibly contact the school for alumnae info

Write to the mayor of the town she used to live in and request halp in getting your inquiry circulated.

Sheila
this is your old pen pal and I must say I do not want to be contacted by you. I have changed my name, had plastic surgery to change my appearance, and gone into hiding just to avoid you. I can not believe you are still stalking me after all these years. My God, girl, will you never give up. Please just stay out of my life.

Your ex-friend

Very funny exfriend. Thanks for all the advice from everyone else. I just logged back on this morning and was happy to see all the help. Since I can't find the old letters, I only remember her name and that she was from Northampton. We were penpals when we were in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade. You are probably right exfriend that she does not want to be contacted but I thought it might be a fun project since it has been 33 years since we corresponded. I found some old postcards in a scrapbook but there was not a street address. Thanks again for all the help and I will start my search. I will post back if I have any luck.

I had a penpal once in France when I was in grade school and we wrote each other. I remember her letters clearly because the paper and evelopes were so much thinner and smelled better than what we used. She was in the same grade as I was, and this was about 1954-55 time frame. She was a sweet girl. I wonder what ever happended to her and if she is still alive. I suspect that she was an oddity in 54-55 since for a grade school girl she was quite fluent in English. I never did meet her - we just wrote back and forth for a while.

Do kids these days do pen pals or is everything just done through internet chat rooms? Sad if true. It was always so exciting to get her letters with those exotic (to me anyway at that time) post marks and strange looking stamps. Gee, talk about dragging up the past. Maybe I will try to locate her but first I will have to dig through my boxes of old childhood goodies to see if I still have one of her letters.

Wow.
