Our cruise embarks from Dover and my impression is that Dover is not an especially handsome or interesting area in which to spend a few pre-cruise days. I'm thinking that Canterbury is a better bet. But I haven't been able to find any high-end accommodations in Canterbury. Doesn't need to be "luxurious," but we'll be jet-lagging, so we'll want a very quiet and comfortable place. Not a lot of "action." I'm sure that such places exist in the area, and I'm hoping that folks may point me in the right direction.
E.g. does anyone know the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge? Any other suggestions for "upscale" lodgings?

Alas, despite my screen name, I don't know much about Canterbury except that it is lovely. The Cathedral Lodge is located directly outside the gates of the Cathedral and is a place "busy" with foot traffic, but not in a bad way.

I have not stayed at these places, but they are listed as four ****.

Thanks for replying. I thought I read that the Lodge is within a walled garden, i.e. a very private and quiet place without all the foot traffic (and thus noise of voices, etc.) Is the info on their website not correct?

I think the Cathedral lodge is very nice. I would trust their website as to the location of the lodge.

I meant only that it is close to the Cathedral and obviously lots of walking around there, but it looks like the rooms will not be affected by the traffic.

If it was me, I'd choose the lodge.

I cannot recommend any accomodations,but would like to say that I found it very beautiful....However,I do remember that in a newspaper that a young person said that they hated it because there was not much night life....I went for cathedral and city and found it terrific...I would have loved to stay there...

I've booked the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge and I suspect it'll be just what we're looking for-- nice and quiet and restful. If anyone has suggestions for where to eat in Canterbury-- again, we're looking for peaceful and quiet rather than a "happening" kind of place-- that'd be great. Thanks to everyone for help!

We did a daytrip to Canterbury last fall and ate lunch at the Weaver's House. We enjoyed it so much that we had tea there before catching our train back to London.

I spent a magical morning in Canterbury years ago. Woke up early and took a walk to the cathedral which was almost empty. I remember the birds chirping inside. Spent a few minutes communing at the spot where Becket was murdered. Walked aimlessly through the old part of the town, past medieval houses, then through a monastery's cloister...just one of those serendipitous experiences that makes European travel so memorable. I stayed in a small B&B, so can't help with a more upscale recommendation, but I enjoyed my stay there; I think it might have been called Tudor House and maybe was on Best Lane...
