Do you know a good pub for lunch along Route from LHR to York?
Can anyone suggest a traditional pub with good food near highways between LHR and York? We will need to stop for lunch as we drive along the M1 and A1 toward York - where the two diverge near Sheffield. I'd like to stay close to the highway, rather than stop in a large city like Sheffield. An earlier posting about Wentworth Village looked lovely, but it's north of where we will break to the A1 to drive on toward York. We love pub food. Thanks so much for any suggestions!

I wouldn't go that way.
I'd stay on the M1 till it joins the A1M at J44, just north of Micklefield.
There's a surprisingly good little cluster of pubs at Garforth, just off J43. We had a reasonable (but not outstanding) nibble at the Chequers.

If you go Flanners route than I can recommend the Swan at Aberford. In particular, if you are travelling on a Sunday they do an excellent carvery. Very reasonably priced, nothing spectacular, but reliable and lots of choice.

Sorry, meant to add. I'm a bit shaky as to where half way is for your next leg, but just off the A1 is the Cook and Barker at Newton in the Moor.

Thanks both of you! The Swan looks terrific. I just looked at the map again and see the direction, flanneruk - thanks. Can I impose on your knowledge again? Do you know of a town or village in Scotland along the route to Dunkeld from York where we could stop, walk around a bit and have lunch? Thanks again!

Our posts crossed in the ether! See above re the Cook and Barker but not sure if this is far north enough as it is in Northumbria.
Are you stopped to sight see on the way up? Holy Island (Lindisfarne) is amazing.

Thanks Morgana - C & B looks perfect! And yes, it's far enough along the route. Holy Island looks marvelous too, and worth more than an hour or two, so we will save that suggestion for our next trip (we leave this Wednesday). Thanks again!

Going up to Dunkeld via the west side (M6) will take a little less time than going up the A1.
If you take the A1/east side, Morgana's suggestion is good. Or stop in Alnwick.
If you go up the M6/west side, you will get farther north faster so a good stop would be in Moffat.
Am I right assuming you have a Sat/Sat change over of self-catering and have to make the drive in one day? Otherwise that is a long drive and you are missing some fabulous sites in between.

Thanks janisj - We will be returning by way of the M6 and have planned two stops along the way. It is a long drive - we stay one night near York on the way - the viamichelin says the difference in the A1 vs. M6 is only 10 minutes. Do you think that is way off? Thanks again.

I'd guess about 1/2 an hour to 45 minutes less simply because there is more motorway -- not enough difference IMO to go that way though since you are traveling back south on the M6.
There are lots of places to stop going up the east side -- I wouldn't plan on a specific place, but just wait to see what sort of time you're making. I'd aim for Alnwick, Bamburgh (or even Lindesfarne if you time the tides right - though it would be a long shot). But if you get a later start or run into traffic, you can always stop before you get that far. And if you are making great time, you might make it farther before you want/need to stop.
