And you had to walk up and down steps, etc.
I'm in the taxi camp. We are usually 2 people travelling but occasionally 4. There's NO doubt the taxi pays for 4. The shuttle driver that said the charge for a taxi would have been much more was certainly being disingenuous--justifying his charge.
If travelling alone, I would try a shuttle--or one of the buses. I will never do the RER again.

I do not like to take a shuttle from the airport. Do not like to have the call and then find hookup place. I really do like the air france bus. However, once on a flight from London, the AF bus got stuck in traffic. It took 2 1/2 hours to get into Paris. I realize this was a fluke so used it again.
However, I have also had several problems getting taxis to show for return airport trips. I like the shuttle on return to pick me up at the door, assist with luggage, and drop me at the correct spot. I usually use ParisShuttle. This last trip was my first experience having a cell phone. Thank goodness for it. I was outside my apt., at 10:15 as arranged and had no way to get back in as I simply left the key inside when I departed. No shuttle came, 10:30, 10:45 panic. I placed two calls to them and was assured they were on the way. Finally at 11:00 they came. My flight was 1:40pm. I made it fine but I was so stressed out. Next time I will have a taxi phone number with me just in case. I had no clue how to call one standing on the side of the road. It would have been easier to remedy I suppose if I had been in a hotel.
I am not sure what the answer is. I have had bad experiences with taxis and the shuttles, so far have not missed a flight.

We used Airport Connection shutttle from CDG to rue du Berri in Paris. 35 euros for one-way for two people. We did have to call from baggage claim when we arrived but we had a toll free number, no need for a phone card. Very reliable. Would use them again. Made the reservation on the internet and had an email confirmation.
