The bus - - nationalexpress.com - - is way cheaper than the train, but at nearly 3 hours, way slower too.

very bad title for sure. But in any case -- London to Birmingham is approx 125 miles. But both are very big places so depending where in London to where in B'ham you could add 30 or more miles to that.

Assuming you want to go from cemtral London tro central Birmingham, walk-up, buy on the spot, day returns on Chiltern Railways from Marylebone station are pretty comparable in price with the bus (and faster and more reliable) at £25 return.
They're a bit pricier on Virgin from Euston at £35, though Virgin's faster.
