Digital photos in emails from the road

I have the software that came with my digital camera (Canon Powershot SD 200) on my laptop, but I am not taking my laptop to Europe. If I use internet cafes to email home, is it possible to include a picture from my camera in the email? How do I go about that, without my specific software? Thanks.

If they computer at the internet cafe has a memory card slot, then you can remove the card from your computer, put it in the computer, attach the pic file from the card to your email, and send.

But some computers at internet cafes don't have memory card readers (or other external inputs), so you need to find one that does. And the card reader has to read your type of memory - usually not a problem if your camera uses SD or CompactFlash.

Alternately, you can bring the USB cord that comes with your camera, and then attach that to the computer at the cafe. Again, not all internet cafes let you do that, but most do.

Dumb techno question, then - if I attach my camera via the USB cord, do I need specific software to download a pic, or is the camera basically another drive? How do I get that one specific photo I want to use - save it to the computer's hard drive?

You don't need software. All recent Windows versions can access a digital camera automatically as an external hard drive.

You should try this before your trip on someone's computer here without the Canon software installed and see what happens. It should act the same elsewhere.

Thanks for the info, rkkwan. We leave in a week, and I'm still trying to iron out all last minute wrinkles (literally and figuratively, but that's more appropos for a packing posting). Going to the neighbors for dinner tonight - I'll try it there!
