Hi - just flew from from MSP to Zurich via Amsterdam 2 weeks ago. I was not asked for a drivers license at any airport. I did rent a car and needed my DL for that. You still may want to double check with the airport.

Just one more person to tell you that on numerous trips to Europe we have never been asked to show a driver's license, only our passports.

Driver's licenses are NOT required for international travel. A valid passport IS.

Don't worry! If your ticket matches your passport you're fine!

I've never taken my driver's liscense to Europe, either, nor have I ever been asked for it. But, the OP's post led me to believe there might be some new rule. I also figured the OP had her tickets in her married name and passport in her maiden name.

I agree that if your tickets match your passport (names identical), then you will have no problem. Leave the liscense at home, but call your airline for check-in procedure if you are concerned.

For international flights a passport has always been required at check-in. For US domestic flights an official photo ID is required since the terror began. A passport is an official photo ID. There is no requirement to have a drivers license to fly internationally. Leave it home.

The only time I've used my driver's license as ID is on a cruise ship, when the cruise line holds on to the passports to facilitate entering countries. On the ship, one is issued a ship's card that is scanned as one leaves the ship and, because it does not have a picture, one is required to bring a photocopy of the passport or a driver's license or some other legal piece of picture ID when reboarding.

I suspect that your friend had some discrepancy between her passport and her plane ticket which is why she was asked for some other form of ID (like Bob C with numeral missing). If the name on your passport is EXACTLY the same as the name on your airline ticket, stop worrying and do nothing.

I wouldn't worry ..there are actually some people in this world who don't drive or have a driver's license. I've never been asked to show anything except a picture ID. As long as the name on your ticket is the same as your passport you're clear.

I carry my drivers license to Europe, only as a 2nd form of ID, but have never been asked to show it... curious about your friend's report to the contrary.

A valid passport with name matching the plane ticket should be all you need for international travel.

We travel a lot, and I've never been asked specifically for a driver's license in over 40 years of travel. As many above have pointed out, a very large percentage of the people in the world don't even have a driver's license, so it would be a ridiculous requirement.

I had a similar situation, and i brought my marriage certificate along just in case. I was never asked for the d.l. but this was pre 9/11. you never know, so be prepared just in case.

I think there must have been some discrepancy between the name on your friend's ticket and the name on the passport, maybe that's why they asked for a back-up ID. Is it possible the name was misspelled on the ticket? In any case, your marriage certificate will not take up a lot of space, so take it along for peace of mind.
