Denfert-Rochereau Ossuary

Has anyone been to the catacombs of Paris?
Tell us about it.

Twice. Very interesting. Bring a flashlight, wear old tennies and clothes you don't mind getting dripped on. And don't forget: Arrete: c'est ici l'empire de la mort!

yes. its 5euros. you go down a deep narrow sprial staircase which seems endless.then you walk in a dark narrow corridor dripping from the roof for about half a mile where you get to the start of the bones.tours are not guided so wait for other visitors to go down with you, you dont want to go down all by yourself.there are hundreds of thousands interrned there, each section has a common toumbstone.the walls are built with bones & decorated with skulls.when you emerge they even check your bags to ensure you didnt try to take a 'souvenir', Sam

Be advised that you go 'down' at Place Denfert Rochereau but you come back 'up' somewhere else in the quartier. I will try to find the address so you can orient to it on a map.

Here is the info about the entrance and exit (and other pertinent information):

Here is a pictorial tour of the Catacombs:

The exit is 36 rue Rémy Dumoncel, which will be between Metro stops Alesia and Mouton Duvernet.

Be warned that the staircase leading back up to the surface is made up of many, many iron steps: STEEP steps. It's easiest to navigate them when there's no one behind you in a hurry.
