Note that these tickets are only valid on Southern trains. Many other trains in South East England are run by South Eastern Trains, Thameslink and South West Trains.
The direct trains from London to Portsmouth are run by South West Trains; the Southern trains go via Gatwick and take about two and a quarter hours.
These cheap day tickets must be bought at least seven days in advance.

For a bargain railpass sold outside of UK consider the London Plus Flexipass:
2 days unlimited travel out of 8 day period is $69 in 2nd class or $99 in first class, senior $85 in first class; under 26 youth $52 in 2nd class, $75 in first class
4 days out of 8 days $129 2nd class, $169 first class, $144 1st senior (60 or over); $127 youth first class, $97 youth second class
7 days out of 15 day period: $169 in 2nd class, $225 in first class, $192 senior 1st class; $169 youth first class, $127 youth second class.
The pass is valid on nearly all rail company trains with a few exceptions (trains out of Paddington most noticeably) and extends to Weymouth, Salisbury, Oxford, Banbury, Northampton, Ely, Kings Lynn, Cambridge, Harich and all of Kent - Dover, etc and all coast in between Weymouth and Dover - Hastings, Portsmouth, etc. So is much more comprehensive than above railpass, which is also a good deal in its more limited scope.
AND: Under the Party Pass the first two adults pay full fare and each passenger after that on the same pass, up to the ninth passenger paty 50% of what the first two pay, making this a GREAT deal for groups and kids 15 and under each get one FREE pass for each adult traveler - making it great for families. Sold thru RailEurope and its agents, such as BETS (800-441-9413), who i highly recommend after dealing with them for years. Pass is good on Gatwick Express and other trains but not on Heathrow Express.

We just used the seven day London Plus pass. It was a great convenience, and I am sure we saved money over purchasing single tickets. This was seven days of travel out of a fifteen day period. Most of our travel was on South Eastern trains.
