Day trips from Florence by train?

We'll be spending a full week in Florence (mid-May) and would like to take some day trips, either by train or bus.

We were thinking of going to Lucca and Pisa.

Anywhere else doable that would be interesting? Thanks.

Hi diane

You might also consider Orvieto, Siena and Bologna.

Don't forget Fiesole. Take the #7 bus from the east side of the FSMN sta (across street) to Fiesole and go to the Etruscan ruins.

Thanks ira for the Fiesole & Siena suggestions.

Are there day tours out of Florence that specifically target wineries/wine routes?

Hi diane,

If you do a text search on "Florence and wine tours" you will get some suggestions.

We recently did Fiesole from Florence. We took a cab up (less than 15 Euro), and then we took the bus back into town.

In Fiesole, don't forget the Roman Bath Ruins, and the viewpoint overlooking Florence. The view is to die for.

Siena is 1 1/2 hours by train (some prefer to drive or take the bus) and it is a relaxing trip through farming countryside. Trains run to Pisa frequently from Florence and the trip takes about one hour.

I took a half day tour with CAF Tours to the Chianti region. We stopped at a winery for a tour of the caves and castle and a wonderful garden wine tasting extravaganza. I really enjoyed it. CAF Tours has brochures in most hotels.
