Day trip to Pompeii; is it all bad news?
I have completed searches and looked at past threads regarding day trips to Pompeii. Some tours drop you off without a guide for 2 and one half hours. Some take you to all the souvenir shops and then a quick look at the ruins. Public transportation seems difficult and I read that a guide there costs around 80 dollars. Has anyone had a good experience concerning a day trip from Rome?

Good morning, Inmiami
Have been into Pompeii about three times over the years but with all with a tour group and with guides all named Vincenzo!!!I would feel that a guide for a couple of hours would certainly be worth the cost, there would be so many things of interest thatyou might just pass by that the guide would bring to your attention and enjoyment.
It is about a 2-1/2 hour trip from Rome
to Naples Centrale and then a short walk to the station of the Circumvesuviana RR to Pompeii. The gides are available at the front entrance and if you still feel the price is too high, get a good tour book
..There was an excellant cafeteria style ristorante on the site. Go inro www.trenitalia. it and www.uniplan.it,and www.vesuviana.it,and www.marketeplace.it/pompeionline..

We did a day trip there ourselves by car. We actually planned on hiring a private guide but couldn't fine one so we purchase the self-guide materials and planned on doing it on our on. As soon as we enjoyed, a group tour had just begun and the guide called us over. For a minimal fee (Maybe $10/adult and kids free, there were 4 of us), we joined the group. It was well worth it. Driving there wasn't too bad, but dealing with Rome traffic could be horrible. We chose to drive becasue we had driven into Rome after visiting other towns. We kept the car overnight and returned it upon our return from Pompeii. I honestly think that the train option is not that big of a deal.
