day trip to Munich - what to see?

We will be doing a day trip to Munich from Salzburg in late June. Any opinions on the best stuff to see/do?

Can you buy the Bayern ticket from the train station in Salzburg?

If you're moderately fit and not too terribly acrophobic the climb up inside the steeple of Alte Peter is interesting and affords great views over the city.

I would definitely consider a visit to the Residenz where, among other things, there is a Ludwig carved carriage collection, the largest of which puts that gilded thing Queen Elizabeth occassionally rides in look absolutely cheap by comparison. The Nymphenburg Palace (within the city and easily reached by tram and a short walk would be another possibility).

A dose of heart-wrenching reality is available with a visit to nearby Dachau (again easily reached by public transport). And, of course the famous glockenspiel at the Marienplatz and, just BEING in Munich is fun.

Beer? yeah, you can do that too and from early morning on, too.

One of my favorite Munich actvities is wandering around the Victualienmarkt, close to the Marienplatz. Have a wurst and beer for lunch under the trees. This time last week I was there. Sigh....

As underhill said, with your interests and having only one day, I'd agree with the suggestions for the Residenz, Nymphenburg, and the English Garden. And the aforementioned Marienplatz and Victualienmarkt are certainly worth a look as well.

Here's a nice place for lunch or dinner if you are in the area:
