day trip to florence?
Is It possible to go from Rome to Florence for the day? Are there any tours that do that? I know florence deserves more time but I am hoping to get the feel of the city and come back in a later holiday when I will have more days to spend.

Hi mariam,
It is a long day, but doable.
It's about 1:35 hr on the ES*.
I suggest that you start in the morning at the Accademia and walk downhill to the Uffizi and the Arno.
Schedules at www.trenitalia.com/en

Sorry baldrick, but the ES trains take 1 hour 35 minutes from Rome to Florence. There are cheaper trains that take longer, but for a daytrip I would pay extra to minimize train time.
Because of frequent trains, you can have a quick trip and reasonable amount of time in Flroence. We took an ES from Rome at about 9AM, arrived Florence around 10:30AM. Spent the day wandering, visiting duomo, baptistery, Accademia, nice lunch, shopping, quick early dinner. We took a return ES at about 9PM, arriving back in Rome just after 10:30PM, about 10 hours in Florence.

We did a day trip to Florence on one of our trips to Rome. Went in the morning on Eurostar train and returned that evening the same way.
We hated to leave, but were glad we at least had a taste of Florence. Be sure you don't go on a Monday, when Uffizi, etc. are closed. We strolled around, had a nice lunch, rubbed Porcelino's nose (which assures return trip) and it worked. On our last trip to Italy, we stayed in Florence for several days which was more satisfying obviously, but I'm glad we did the day trip.
