Day Trip Suggestions from Munich
Hello all. Our summer trip ends in Munich in August. We have 5 nights there. Please note we will have already done the Ludwig castles beforehand. Besides Salzburg, what are the day trips that are a must from Munich? We will have our 6 year old son with us...don't know if Regensburg, Nuremberg or Rothenberg are the best. Or, perhaps...Innsbruck? Only looking for one top notch, must-see city so we aren't running ourselves ragged. Thanks!

There is plenty to see and do in Munich. Unless you have been there, or have some places nearby that you are dying to see, I would say stay in Munich. Regensburg is lovely, but not sure I would do it as a day trip. I guess It depends on how much you want to move around with your little one.

Nurnberg is fairly close and if interested in Third Reich relics it has more than any place anywhere - like the old stadium Hitler famously reviewed goose-stepping troops on the vast parade grounds - balcony still there and open to tourists.
Nurnberg itself is a neat city too.
Dachau is an easy trip from Munich to the suburban memorial camp.
Salzburg is great.
All those trains - even to Salzburg - can be done cheaply with the Bavarian Pass - buy it locally - for about 30-35 for all of you unlimited travel on regional trains and urban transports for the whole day - can't take faster trains but the savings can be immense. For details on German trains check www.bahn.de/en - official site of German Railways - www.budgeteuropetravel.com (check Germany section on other possible day trips)and www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com.
IMO there are no must day trips except those you decide are. Salzburg would be my favorite.
