Salzburg would be a great base for those places - Berchtesgaden is a short enough S-Bahn ride from Salzburg with frequent service (relatively new service - better than the former round-about train route requiring a change and taking longer often.

Munich is 1.5 hours from Salzburg by fast train or about an hour longer by regional train (on which however the bargain Bavaria Pass is valid - 29 euros for unlimited regional trains and also transports in Munich itself but you cannot take the faster express trains so you lose about an hour each way and regional trains are also not nearl IME so comfy as say ICE trains.

For Fussen however you have a much longer day trip by train or car - going via Innsbruck and Garmisch and Reutte to take from there RVO buses thru the river gap to Fussen and Mad Ludwig's castles, a few miles out of town.

So really Munich seems to be a better base for those three places since it is I would think a much shorter distance timewise from Munich - about 2 hours by train - not sure how long from Salzburg but could be much longer.

For Switzerland from Salzburg take trains or drive via Innsbruck to Buchs and Switzerland and on to Zurich where you get direct trains to Interlaken - probably taking much of a day. From Munich to Zurich is about 4 hours by train.

If traveling around Switzerland much at all by train then strongly look at a Swiss Pass, valid on trains, buses, city transports and also giving free entry to 400+ Swiss museums - you would use the pass from Buchs, if coming via Austria, or from the border station after Bregenz, austria if coming from Munich.

again in Bavaria say going Munich to Fussen the Bavaria Pass is a bargain - and trains between Munich and Fussen are mostly regional trains you can use it on.

For oodles and oodles of great info on trains in those countries check out the following IMO superb sources - www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.set61.com and www.ricksteves.com. But you do not say if you are going by train or car - in winter car travel can be dicey and often renting a car in one country and returning it in another can result in a steep frop-off charge.

Mayank, on another thread about visiting Germany in February, you mentioned going to Hitler's Eagle's Nest. Just so you aren't disappointed yourself, the Eagle's Nest is not open in the winter.

and the Eagle's Nest disappoints many even when it is open as it is just another restaurant now - one with rave views that so mesmerized the Fuhrer - so the views can be seen even in winter from the vicinity but inside the restaurant is just another restaurant with folks not wanting to create any shrine to Hitler or stress any association with him - is my understanding.

If using trains and Salzburg as a base then it would be 4 hours or a tad more by train to Fussen and the fastest timings all go thru Munich, which is 2 hours from Fussen - so for Salzburg and Fussen Munich by far is the best base if traveling by train it seems - even Bertchesgaden is not that far by train from Munich.
