Salzburg

It is easy to get to Salzburg and Fussen by train from Munich. Both are about a 2 hour train ride in each direction. Look into the Bayern Pass, for very inexpensive rates.

My wife and I did a day trip to Salzburg on New Years Day. Trains leave every forty minutes or so from Munich for the 90 minute trip.
We got the return schedule from the Info booth at the Salzburg station(English spoken).
We felt that we had plenty of time in the city and caught an 8:40 back to Munich after dinner in Salzburg(Weisses Kreuz, good eastern European food).
