Day Trip Rome to Amalfi Coast

Hello all,
I'm new and in desperate need of advise and help in a "Day Trip" from Rome to the Amalfi Coast. I have researched until i'm about going crazy. Wife and I are going to Rome for 4days/5 nights (early September 8) then jump on a cruise ship for 10 days to tour Parts of Italy and the Grecian isles. What we don't get out of this is time enough to see the Amalfi coast from the ship dock at Naples. (7 hours MAX) So my only option is to do it from our time in Rome. I am thinking we would do the Train LIne express from Rome to Naples, then change up to the Circumvesuviana train (is this a safe option train?) that goes to Sorrento. I'm just kind of freaked out about changing trains and making sure it all happens. It looks like I would have to go from one station in Naples to another in order to get to the other train. How much time do I need between train times? I know it will be a long day as we have an AIR BNB in Rome for the time period. That doesn't bother me.
Train schedules appear to run as follows:
Train Line 6:00a- 7:12a Rome to Naples Circumvesuviana Train: Naples to Sorrento: 7:30a- 8:41a or 8:06a-9:17a
Return: Circumvesuviana Train: Sorrento to Naples: 7:02p-8:15p Train Line: Naples to Rome: 8:30p-9:38p Can we Make this???

Is it possible to make these time schedules between trains??? 15- 20 minutes between stops??

I suppose after I make it to Sorrento I can catch a bus over to the Amalfi area or rent a car, or get a taxi. I'm no spring chicken, but I'm trying to do my best here.

Is there a better way to do this??? Please Help!!

Thanks,

Dave

Getting yourself to Sorrento is still not the Amalfi Coast. You'd still need a driver (or take the bus/ferry) to get to Positano/Amalfi/...

Not really enough time to do it properly,...but if you really want to see the AC from Rome, I'd book a day trip & leaving the planning/transportation to the experts.
Something like this:

Leave this for your next trip. Losing a day from Rome to spend most of that day travelling rather than seeing is not a good use of your time, in my opinion.

I think it is too long for a day trip also, but if I were going to do it, I'd take a direct train to Salerno, walk 10 minutes to the ferry port and travel to Amalfi via the sea.

yorkshire's suggestion is the simplest overall outside of a guided tour, but it would take about 3 hours each way. Weather would have to be good, not only to insure it's enjoyable but also to be confident the ferries are operating per schedule.

Can you find out what views of the Amalfi Coast you'll have from the cruise ship after it leaves Naples?

Spend the time in Rome in Rome. Depending on arrival times and when you need to be in Cittavecchia to start your cruise, your time is likely to be limited. Check with your cruise line about whether they have an Amalfi trip when stopping at Naples or look at booking something independently from there. It is just over an hour taxi ride so could be doable.

If you want more info on the train trip, check this website out -
https://www.seat61.com/international...m#Rome-Pompeii

It is, as pointed out, a long journey for a day trip. But it might help having more information to help decide what to do. It's been a long time since we visited but the train from Rome to Naples, and the train from Naples to Sorrento, went from the same general area, I think we had to go down one level and get a ticket for the train to Sorrento. At the time, the bus from Sorrento to Positano, Amalfi, etc, left from outside the train station at Sorrento. This is all explained on the Seat61 website. The bus did get quite crowded so don't leave it to the last minute to head back to Naples/Rome.

It it was me doing this, I'd get some breakfast supplies to eat on the train and go really early. Even if you only make it to Sorrento, there are some wonderful views from there. We were warned to be careful of our belongings at the Naples train station so just be aware of your bags and surroundings.

I'm not suggesting you stay here, but this is one of the places we stayed at years ago, you can see what the views are like. This was about 20 min walk from the centre of Sorrento. The other visit we had, we stayed at a little pensione, right in the middle of Sorrento, and loved being so central.

from memory, when you get to Naples you need to go to a different platform and I think that took a little bit of time for us because we did not know where we were going.
and it was confusing.. so 15 minutes may not be enough.
I would take the 8.06. you will be waiting a bit longer between trains, but at least you will not be rushing and panicking

Sorrento is part of the Amalfi coast. what do you want to see. It might make better sense to get yourself to Naples, and then take a day tour of the Amalfi coast. There should be plenty you can check out on Trip advisor. I would not be hiring a car just for the day.

Actually, Sorrento is not part of the Amalfi Coast.
This whole idea is a lot of time getting there from Rome and back for not a whole lot of time there. I agree that you might want to find out what you will see from the cruise ship when leaving Naples.

Have you been to Rome before? There is so much to see there, four days will barely scratch the surface.

Amalfi Coast deserves at least 2-3 nights, not one day trip. Kick back and enjoy the gorgeous scenery. Stick to Rome this time around.

Welcome to Fodors -- You say you know it will be a long day . . . but maybe not quite just how long. You need to factor in the time to get from your accommodations to the station, figuring out the logistics changing trains or train/ferry, dashing around in unfamiliar territory - then the same in reverse.

Either 1) take an organized tour - it will be rushed but a lot more efficient than you's manage on your own . . . or . . . 2) drop the idea and visit the AC on some other trip when you can devote 3 or 4 days.

"Is there a better way to do this???"
A better way to do this would be to make it an overnight trip (at least). Don't check out of your Airbnb but take the "2 day trip" and spend the night along the way.
If you want a private driver to drive you along the Amalfi coast, I can share LoveItaly's personal recommendation. He is fabulous.

I agree that this is far too rushed to make it a worthwhile day trip but here's an idea - if you just have to do it, get an early start and at the end of the day spend the night in Sorrento before getting the train back to Rome in the morning. That is of course going to cut down on your time in Rome but at least it would give you a better shot at seeing the Amalfi coast.

Does your cruise ship offer an Amalfi coast tour? Have you signed up on your specific Roll Call on CruiseCritic to see if someone else on your cruise is already putting together an Amalfi coast tour independent of the cruise line? Or is there something else you are dying to use the Naples stop for?

I’d just enjoy Rome if 4-5 days are all you have there.

I second the suggestion of doing a private tour of the Amalfi Coast from your port stop at Naples. We did this in 2016 with my mom, visited Amalfi and Ravello before going back to our ship in Salerno. You can stop for lunch somewhere en route, then take the freeway across the hinterland back to Naples from Ravello. There’s probably similar tours set up by your fellow cruisers, you could ask on your Roll Call if they have spots.

The other option is to make an overnight trip from Naples, stopping perhaps at Sorrento before training back to Rome the next day.
