Day-trip London to Chawton/Winchester?
We'll be in London the first week of April. One of those days, we plan to take a daytrip via train to Winchester. How far is Chawton from the train station & Winchester? Would it be possible to visit Chawton as well?

Thanks in advance!

Chawton is about 18 miles from Winchester, there are buses that run from here to Alton. If you just wanted to visit Jane Austins house your better bet would be to get a train from Waterloo to Alton which is the nearest town to Chawton this the web page for Alton from hantsweb:-http://www.hants.gov.uk/localpages/north_east/alton/attract.html
hope this helps, and enjoy your visit.
I agree with Jan; the easiest way to Chawton would be a train from Waterloo to Alton. (They leave every half hour most of the day on weekdays, and take just over an hour to reach Alton.)

However, the bus from Alton station can take some waiting, and the one I used to take lets you off a bit out of Chawton, and may not return regularly.

If money is not tight, I'd take a taxi, either from Alton station or from Winchester itself. Alton is closer, but it's a separate train line from London, so this would mean two day trips, one to Winchester and one to Alton/Chawton.

If you contact the tourist office in Winchester beforehand, it might be easier to find a driver who will take you to Chawton and either wait or pick you up later, for a set fee.

Chawton is a delight for Jane Austen fans -- hope you can make it!

The train service to Alton is only once an hour whereas to Winchester it is approximately every 15 minutes. The number 64 bus goes between Winchester and Alton about every 30 minutes and will stop near Chawton. The last time I took a taxi from Winchester (to Ropley which is a little closer) it cost me £16. I would say that you would not want to spend a whole day in Chawton.

I hope some of this will help you amke your decision.

Ms X - If you want to see Winchester and Chawton (both very worthwhil trips) I would opt for renting a car for the day.

If you rent the car from LHR (instead of the central city) it is not a bad drive to Winchester and then you can be on your own schedule for going to Chawton, etc.

And a one day car rental could even be cheaper than two train tickets plus bus or taxi.

You should also be aware that to be able to use a cheap day return ticket, you need to travel outside the rush hour and this will probably mean arriving later than 10 am. If you want to arrive earlier the price of a day return rises to £36 approximately. You can use www.thetrainline.com for ticket prices and timetable, but some of the cheapest prices have to be booked well in advance.

Ann, I'm afraid your data are incorrect. The standard day return fare, with no time restrictions, is £19.80. And there is no saving by booking day return tickets in advance. Check www.qjump.co.uk for fares and schedules.

welcome to Fodors Allesandro:
In general, it is much better to post your own, new thread rather than topping a ten year old one. In this case though --nothing much will have changed except for the cost of the train tickets
