Day trip from Paris: Troyes or Provins?

Hello all: I have a long weekend in Paris next week, and thinking of a day trip outside Paris. I have done all the obvious, and trying to decide between Troyes or Provins (inspired by kerouac’s photos from 2016: https://www.fodors.com/community/europe/provins-as-a-day-trip-from-paris-1121838/).

I would welcome your feedback.

Many thanks … Ger

Hi Ger,

Just based upon images, I vote Troyes. They appear to have similar populations and distance from Paris. When googling best 10 things, Troyes also has best 15! More to do?

Are you leaning either way?

I've been to both, and that's a hard choice, but I think I would choose Troyes. You wouldn't kick yourself for going to Provins, though.

I've only been to Troyes, but enjoyed it so don't think you'd regret that one.

Been to both but really only rode bike thru and around Troyes so did not take it all in but seemed a much larger city than Provins which I call an Italian hilltown near Paris - I loved Provins - small and compact and ramparts like those rarely seen - old town on hill is cool. Easily managed you could even do both I guess - flip a coin.

Trip report of sorts from my 2010 visit on a day trip from Orleans:

Day Trip Orleans to Provins, an Italian Hill Town in France

Well, I just had the pleasure of seeing kerouac’s photos of Provins from 2016 and I am just delighted to have seen them. I wish I had more days in Paris this year - but I know that Provins will be a priority for next year's visit. Perhaps Troyes as well.

Thank you kerouac for these gorgeous and interesting photos...and the link to the biking trip.

Shame that you can't do both as one really compliments the other. I have been to both several times as they are easy trips from Paris. Troyes is less touristy with half timbered houses in abundance, a bustling medieval center and an excellent modern art museum. Provins itself is treated as a museum and is a delightful visit. Good luck in your choice.

Troyes is a considerably bigger city and I also did a report about it, lest you think I am taking sides: http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com/thread/7379/troyes

I
would just point out that with a Navigo, transportation to Provins is included. Troyes is a main line train that costs extra.

Well Kerouac, that has not helped at all in making my decision!

For planning purposes, how long would you estimate to enjoy the town and have lunch?

regards Ger
