Day trip from Munich. Rothenburg?
Since I will be traveling from Munich to Salzburg to Prague to Budapest, I am trying to think of the "best" day or less trip while in Germany. I think maybe Rothenburg would be interesting and picturesque. I enjoyed Girona near Barcelona. I like magnificent vistas and fascinating "ancient" little towns. Next question: is there a faster alternative than a package 10 hour tour everyone has? How to get there? Another interest but the Rhine is not near Munich, is a boat trip up any river looking at quaint towns? I don't think the Danube really has this, and time can be spent seeing other things. Additionally, am interested in a day trip from Salzburg apart from one of the Sound of Music tours, to view breath-taking mountains, etc. Help, thoughts? Jack Glasser, [email protected]

I think that if you are looking for a day trip to Rothenburg from Munich, the Bus would be a good option. You can do it by rail, but it requires several changes.
Another option would be to catch the train to Regensberg and take a boat trip on the Danube. Regensberg is a charming city, much like Rothenburg (but bigger).
Also interesting would be a tour to the Bavarian Alps to Garmisch-Partinkirchen and a ride up the Zugspitze or go over to Fussen to see the Castles of Ludwig II. (I'm not going to try to spell them.)

The castles Bird is referring to are Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau!
A town near Munich that I have always wanted to visit is Landshut. Should be quite easy to do in a day trip.

I liked Regensburg as well. No wall but a great Gothic cathedral and a few Roman army ruins. Best of all, I liked just walking the alley ways between the many squares. My wife enjoyed a tour of the Thurn and Taxis palace, still occupied by one of Germany's richest aristocratic families. Regensburg a UNESCO world heritage site.

if I want to do the Fuessen area and castles- Neu/ Hof/ Lin in leisurely fashion and get the feel of Bavaria do you think spending 2-3 nights there makes sense- will be driving in and out from munich so not looking to go much further.
