Flanner, I believe there are direct flights to Naples from the US.

I have been stopped at customs in Italy for an inspection. I assume it was a random thing, although my husband says I look suspicious. Nine times out of ten, you won't be stopped and will just walk through the door.

In the US, both immigration and customs are ordeals, the worst in the world, and they don't seem to have a good separation of roles. I was once pulled aside at customs in Boston and made to wait, standing, for an hour, after a 20-hour trip, for a special interrogation. It turned out that the reason was that I hadn't provided an address on the card, for the simple reason that I didn't know the address, as I was being picked up at the airport. This would seem to me to be a matter for immigration, not customs. The customs official insisted that I had to provide an address. I then said that it was a B&B that I thought had "Garden" in the name. She pulled out a phone book, and when she proposed a candidate, I said, "That's the one!"

Pizza that's sold by the slice usually has a thicker crust than pizza sole "by the plate" as they say in Italy. The single serving "plate" pizzas often have such a thin crust that eating with your hands would be almost impossible. Still, it's not considered crass, just impractical, to eat it with your hands. Pizza sold by the slice is almost always eaten with your hands, as it's an informal food, often consumed standing at the bar.

No - there are flights from the US to Naples at some times of year - so definitely need immigration.
