CROATIA RECOMMENDATION
Hello; We will be coming from Rovinj and driving to the Split area. Perhaps a five hour drive. We can stay in Split or Trogir for three nights before going to Hvar. If we stayed in Trogir, we would then spend a whole day in Split and another whole day in Sibenik. But if we stayed in Split, we would then spend a day in Trogir and a day in Sibenik. What town/city do you suggest? THANKS Iris

I would investigate parking options first. Since you won't be in either place too long that should be the deciding factor.
Trogir is a small town. Split is a largish city--which do you think you would prefer?
What I would do actually is stop in Sibenik and stay a night, then go on to either Split or Trogir. Even though it is close, it's still backtracking.
Split has a lot more to see than Trogir, but if you prefer a small place then you'd prefer Trogir. Hope that helps.

The posters are correct - it really depends on what you are seeking. I personally like Trogir better than Split but I like small places better than large centres for the most part. It is a charming and pretty place. If you do find a place to stay make sure to stay in Trogir (there are lots) - not towards Split or you may be contending with the airport with incredibly frequent and loud planes! We made that mistake once and it sounded as though the planes were taking off and landing right in our room!

I too would prefer to stay in Trogir. It's prettier and friendlier. There is a large car park just outside the Old Town which is easy to find, has plenty of spaces and isn't expensive. There's probably plenty of free parking as well, but I arrived at night and just wanted to park quickly. It was less than 1 euro per hour.
If I stayed in Split I would want to stay inside the walls of Diocletian's Palace or very closr to, otherwise you could be in any almost any city, and parking in that part of Split tends to be quite expensive. Unless your accommodation offers parking then you'll have to pay. The car park just off the Riva is about 4-5 euros an hour, but well worth it for convenience if you are only there for a few hours...

Since I feel that Split has very little appeal outside of the Palace walls and seafront promenade, I would choose Trogir every time. Sure it's small but it's much more chilled out and the overall atmosphere is that of a vibrant and charming small town.
Since I hate moving hotels and merely avoid backtracking where possible, I would stay in Trogir for all three nights, but that's a personal choice.
Since you are in the area, you might consider tacking on a visit to Krka National Park as well. It's a little like Plitvice, but you can only get to the park by boat and once there you have a little walks and boat rides to see the sites which include historical sites as well as beautiful travertine falls.

Hi Everyone; Thanks for you suggestions. I think staying over in Sibenik for one night will work. Then visit Trogir for most of the next day before spending two nights in Split. We could drop off the car at the airport before going to our hotel in Split. That makes it easy to get to the boat to Hvar on leaving Split. We would stay in Hotel Peristil. Now to find a hotel in Sibenik. Thank You Iris
