Sometimes on a warm day, you will see two or three people strolling around together wearing light jackets. Those are plainclothes police and they have to wear a jacket because of their shoulder holster.

RS caters for a North American public. In Europe he is virtually unknown. I have never seen one of his guide books in the travel section of bookshops.

Ker, the way I picture Snob is the actor from Good morning Vietanm, who is the boss of Robin Williams : at the end of the movie he tells Robin that he has no humour, and that HE, knows what humour is - and goes to talk about the Marx brothers... Fabulous. A good actor btw.

I have never heard about Rick Steves outside of this forum. I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of Belgian people have never heard of him. As far as I know his guides are not translated into Dutch; Belgian people do not read English books if they can help it.
You just do not see his books here; why would we have heard of him? Are we all morons?
To answer the OPs question; the only place where we were ever pickpocketed was on the Barcelona metro. Be sensible and aware of your surroundings, especially in areas with lots of tourists. We live in Europe, travel regularly to other cities, don't use moneybelts, and apart from Barcelona have never had a problem.

We first heard about Rick Steves about 15 years ago. A couple we know wouldnt plan one day in Europe without consulting his books and videos. They are both school teachers. They leave the first week in June, and return mid August every year

Nobody in France that I know, and I know a LOt of peope who are tour operators and plugged into the whole France tour system, knows jack about Rick Steves. Nobody's ever heard of him anywhere in France, as far as I know. Why would they?

I think that I have only heard about Mr Steves on this forum, and on Trip Advisor. He is little known in the Antipodes.
I read a little of one of his guide books about Italy, Venice in particular, and don't much like his style. A bit too much corny humour, and not a few factual errors.
I understand that he has a larger footprint in the north of America, where his TV shows are screened, and where his luggage can be purchased.
He's pitching his work at the Anglophone market, and that is pretty limiting. USA, Canada, UK, Aus, NZ and South Africa just about wraps it. Also he seems to be pitching at a market that is pressed for time, short vacations, and that comes through in his work. Visit rooms 1, 3 and 7 in the Accademia, have a drink in this bar, get your hair cut at this barber, and allow 2 hours for the Ducal Palace, take this particular walk. A bit like eating in a place with a t menu.
But that's just my opinion....

For a professional travel writer Steves knows little about art and the local culture. He also arbitrarily includes one town while omitting neighboring towns. He is a lazy, and often an uneducated writer.

I am quite sure that Rick Steves would not be rattled by the comments here.He is doing quite well without any of your business. But carry on, the OP has left the building, that NY person may have run out of nasty stabs, so by all means trash Rick Steves. And no, I am not a fan, but I can certainly see his niche in the travel world.
