Crete trip in early September

My spouse and I are planning a trip to Crete for end August/early September, and I need some guidance on what needs to be booked in advance. We will fly from Athens to Heraklion, then spend a week or so driving to Chania and beaches on the west. At the end, fly back to Athen from Chania. We will book a hotel for Heraklion and probably Chania, but I am wondering if we can 'wing it" along the way - such as Matala, Reythmno, and Palechora, etc?

I'm trying to balance some flexibility in the plans but don't want to stress out trying to find hotels. We are late 40's, experienced travellers and don't need super fancy digs. Last time we went to Create it was early spring and hotels were not a problem. But given the time of year, should we plan it all out?
Thanks for the help!

dandc, I'm not sure i can be much help as my one and only trip to Crete was about 30 years ago when we did roughly the same trip you are planning, and in September.

We just booked our first 2 nights in Heraklion, nowhere else. I'd be surprised if the position has changed that much, given the current economic situation.

Look it is peak time. I'd suggest you contact a few hotels from Tripadvisor and see if they have vacancies then and you'll get an idea. Chania and Rethymon are pretty busy all the time and would need pre-booking then. It's possible the economic situation is actually encouraging more tourists looking for lower priced deals....
Like you did last time , we are going in May and expect most places to be quiet except the above

yes, was thinking Chania booking a must so I will do that, as well as Rethymno. However, I'm less familiar with Matala area and if there is 'inventory'.

August is not a good month to look for accommodation on the spot..
I would suggest to make a good search first, and locate the hotels, apartments, studios that interest you.

Looking during August ( even at the end of it) for accommodation can be pretty stressful, and you will end up paying a higher price, compared to an advanced booking.

This year will be a record year for tourism in Greece, and the experts expect a new all time record, which will be more than 17 Million tourists.
