Crete: Stay in Rethymno or Near Agios Nikolaos?

We will be staying in a time share for a week in Crete in late April or early May. The choices are 1) in Rehtymno which is about half way between Iraklio and Hanai, or 2) in Analipsi Makri Gyalou, which appears to be near Agios Nikolaos.

We are three very active women in our 50's. I assume we will rent a car, but probably are not wild about driving long distances at night.

Which location do you recommend?

My husband and I were underwhelmed with Agios Nikolaos; we liked Rethymnon and west of there much better.

Personally, I prefer West Crete to East.

if you are a bit of an explorer and want to see a really authentic part of the island, try visiting east crete, especially laid back towns like Sitia or fab deserted beaches like Xerocambos. If you're interested you can find out more at eastcretemagazineDOTcom

PS; sorry should have read your post a bit better. Analipsi is just outside makri Gialou (makrigialos) - this is in east Crete. Makrigialos is a small but bustling resort - plenty of restuarants and cafes but no loud booming nightlife and the beaches here are very lovely (sandy coves) Analipisi is just outside of town
