I would simply buy point to point tickets
Separate tickts:
Venice to Verona (11.50 Euro)
Verona to Lake Garda (Desenzano) (2.40 Euro, trains a couple times an hour)
Lake Garda to Milan (11 Euro)
are about the same cost as Venice-Milan ticket (23 Euro)

TYP.
I looked up the schedules on www.trenitalia.com. There is no need to pre-purchase tickets for these routes.
From Venice to Verona it's only about 1hr travel, and there are trains 2-3 times per hour. You can simply go to the train station when you wish to travel, buy a ticket, and get on the train.
Ditto for the other legs.
If you want to have tickets in hand beforehand, buy them at the train station a day ahead - but really no need.
