Corfu + environs
Hi,
I have 8 days that we'd like to spend in Corfu and explore the nearby Greek islands (and anything else interesting). I'm wondering if you guys think we should home base in Corfu and venture out on day trips? Or should we split the time up between a few locations? And what should we do -- both in Corfu and all around there? We are an adventurous family, love all things outdoors and water-related, and are willing to go anywhere around Corfu (even other countries) as long as transit times aren't too long. Thanks for any suggestions!

There are two islands to the south of Corfu, Paxos and Antipaxos. The ferry takes about 60 to 90 minutes, depending on which boat you take. Paxos is small and doesn't take long to see and its beaches are its main attraction. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attrac...n_Islands.html
Antipaxos is tiny and has a few "things to do" https://www.lonelyplanet.com/greece/...o/a/poi/359445
There are no nearby islands to the south other than these two. To the north you have Ereikoussa, which is mainly a beach trip, some churches and walks in the hills. In that area is Othonoi, again beaches and a small town. Further round is Mathraki, beaches and not much to do for a day and the tiny island of Trachea, again minimal amenities.
The most popular trip is to Paxos and Antipaxos.
Corfu Town (Kerkira) is not to be missed and the old town is lovely. Rent a boat and ride as far round the island as your fuel will take you, depending on your starting point. We've rented from Gouvia and made it up to Kassiopi. On the opposite coast, the water sports are good at Paleokastritsa and the beach at Glyfada is lovely. The southern tip of the island caters to a mainly younger crowd in season, who get very drunk.

Does it have to be a trip to another island? You could visit Sivota on the mainland, 25km or so from Igoumenitsa. You can take the ferry from Corfu to Igoumenitsa.
Sivota has many beautiful beaches with many coves and small islands, you could also go to Parga. Ioannina might be too far for a day trip.

I am also considering visiting Corfu and wondered the same thing - what kind of day trips or nearby other places to visit. The suggestions in Albania sound great - I'd never even heard of them so googled them. This website was interesting - https://www.adventurous-travels.com/...ul-unesco-town
Anyway, I'd love more info on the logistics of how one would visit those places on a day trip from Corfu.

Googling brings up numerous day trips from Corfu to Butrint but I don't see anything to Gjirokaster. Is it possible to do that as a day trip independently - I guess it would be ferry and then bus? How frequent (dependable) is that kind of transportation. The trip I'm planning is for September/early October. I realize spending a night is usually a good idea but my trip has quite a few stops already so a longer stay on Corfu with day trips looks more appealing.

If you can't spend a night in Albania, just stick to Butrint.
Gjirokaster is not worth as a daytrip, because the ferry schedule doesn't give you much time.
The earliest you can arrive to Saranda by ferry from Corfu is 10 am, taking a bus/furgon to Gjirokaster takes another hour, so you'll arrive not much earlier than 12.
The last ferry to Corfu leaves Saranda at 16, so you'd have to take a bus back around 2pm.
The only way this could make some sense if you charter a taxi or pre-arrange a car with driver meeting you in the port and taking you directly to Gjirokaster and returning in time to catch the afternoon ferry.
