jck4 - take heart, the Marriott may be bland and corporate, but it is a very, very good hotel. It is exceedingly popular because it offers excellent service and great rooms. I don't think any other hotel in Copenhagen matches it on those two categories. And believe me when I say that the Danes don't normally do service very well.
Might you get a more "local" experience somewhere else? Sure, but remember that the Danes are a pretty cosmopolitan lot and the hotels can seem a bit "could be anywhere". Do I wish that the Marriott went a bit more Danish Modern? Sure, but I happen to like that look, while others think it clinical. FWIW, the Danes actually like the juxtaposition of the modern architectural style with more classic (if muted) furnishings, and the Marriott isn't that far from that model.
Honestly, I struggle to think of a hotel that I could recommend in CPH for the local character, save maybe the Skt Petri. But, while I like the style there, it is of that modern minimalist style that prevails at a lot of hotels around the world. That this style is clearly Scandinavian is true, but it can still feel a bit, "could be Hong Kong".
There are places that I might seek out a local-style hotel, but I don't think Denmark is one of those places. The best examples of modern Denmark are pretty international, and the nostalgic places are simply too "theme park". It is definitely the sort of place where one should choose on shower pressure.

travelgourmet - thanks for the note - I slept like a baby under that plush down cover and had 2 luxurious bubble baths, all for $100/night. you've made me feel better about not staying at a rustic Danish hotel closer to the heart of things. Future travelers do not fear. We also ate at Wagamama twice and you don't have to pay to get into Tivoli to eat there. yum!
