LOT was one of top choices years ago - then after partnership with Lufthansa they hit the bottom mostly on service / food / etc ... Lately after some re-orgs they have been trying to do better ... In compare with other airlines they are still fine - giving you fairly enough leg/shoulder room in 767 Boeings they been using ... 2 movies over Atlantic with English/Polish channels - food ... better - but still average when you consider other airlines ... btw for most of the flight drinks are selfserv - which in todays times I do have a problem with ... Also intercom comments by pilot or staff are great in Polish but most of the times really bad in English - furtunatly plane staff do speak at least English - so ask - rather then be in dark ;-)

As for Warsaw ...

You can do few day trips from Warsaw since it is centrally located - So Krakow and posibly Gdansk or Torun be possible ... Krakow and Torun are about 3hrs by train ...

As for just Warsaw ...
"Old City"
Lazienki Palace ->
Wialnow Palace ->
should probably be on top of your list ...
bit outside of Warsaw (check in hotel info desk for tours)
Kampinos National Park ->

For other ideas check sites like:

I traveled via LOT to Kyiv/Kiev from JFK back in 2001. So here are my impressions:
Late take off from JFK, Not to mention that if my brother-in-law's friend was not with me I would have understood less than nothing at the boarding gate at JFK. We did make it to Kiev on time.
The return flight broke down in Warsaw, we were asked to stay within the "Customs zone", lots of snacks and drinks while the replacement aircraft came from Canada?
If you have time and the plane is inoperable try the train.
My wife is Ukrainian (now American) says there is a train to Kyiv,I believe it runs daily, from there your options are open. My wife says that it starts in Berlin.
There is a small hotel within the "customs zone" at the airport and the Polish people could not be more friendly, it is one of my favorite countries in Europe.
Warsaw International airport is not new but at the same time it is very user friendly and the food court? Excuse but with the food choices and the smiling faces, I gain weight.
There are many shops also, I try to forbid my wife but that is like trying to stop the rain!
In-flight, I found this service the match to SwissAir, a few months prior, and the flight staff's English, excuse me, but the equal of my Irish Mother's from an American's oppinion.

Thanks for the info. We are travelling with a group of 12 to Odessa and thought we may go on ahead and stop over in Warsaw or Vienna depending on our enroute stop over. With the mention of Lot airlines I was a bit skeptical but the reports seem good. If we do stop in Warsaw for a few days will try to do side trips . anyone ideas on hotels for a family of 4? Guess I should post this separately.

LOT is a first class airline. Its fleet is new. Hotels; The Peace Corps used 'SASKI', a friend preferred , Europejski. I like the POLONIA. These are Polish hotels. Do an online search of each. A day trip - LICHEN. Again do an online search.

Not sure about your budget also ages of your group (where some have promotions and offer kids - even up to 18 free or lower price when booking with adults)... so you may need to shop around a little and do a search on this forum to get some links and check latest promotions...

You also may want to look into renting an appartment...

here are some links (btw I have not tried any of those so can't really recommand)...
