Considering that my feet are very fussy, these are very comfortable and look nice on and will be great for just a relaxing, daytime walk here in my home town or in a small Spanish town, or walking around a pool at a villa or along a beach side promenade.

Click on women and scroll down to Bella - the light color is what I bought. Hope it works.
Not sure whether or not they will be fine in Italy, but I think they will be fine most anywhere with casual clothes and they are comfortable.

Oh, no, I think the Billa on the Zaterre is much nicer-and less crowded-than the one on Strada Nova. The post office is also next door.Convenient.
There is a very nice Coop south of the Oespadale Vaporetto stop.

I jumped on this thread interested in what type of shoes I should be thinking about getting for my fall trip to Italy. I don't care much about looking like a tourist, I just don't want my feet to hurt! You all are hilarious! I thought all the planning for this trip was mind boggling... Now I'm reading that I can't wear my big ol white comfy tennis shoes? And I have to make room for 4 -6 pairs of shoes in my luggage? argh.... more planning and shopping in the works! I did like the post about the travel bag. Brand new travel bag or worn out old computer bag. what's safer?

I see a lot of women in the city carrying those Michael von Kramer bags with the MKMKMK design. I don't think they are attractive.
I usually go around with my Patagonia rucksack. It lightweight and waterproof.
I also carry a fabric tote bag with me for picking up wine, cheese, and bread along my walking route.

Speer: You don't HAVE to do anything. If 4-6 pairs of shoes sounds too much for you, bring only two or three. Sometimes posts like this one will help you realize something you haven't thought of yet, but for the most part, you know what is best for you! One thing to keep in mind though is that if you are going to go buy some new shoes, make sure you break them in before you leave! No matter how comfortable the shoes are supposed to be, your feet need to get used to them, or else you'll be in pain.
As for bags, I think a fairly nondescript looking bag is best? Something that looks too much like a "travel bag" is likely to single you out as a tourist even more, in my opinion, which I think heightens the chances that you'll be targeted by pick pockets. Plus most "travel bags" are pretty ugly, really.
I'm bringing a leather cross body "bucket" style bag with me. It's very simple and nondescript looking (though I think the leather looks very rich and beautiful) and the zipper sits safely under my arm. In fact when I carry it I tend to hold onto the strap and rest my arm on the bag itself, so I feel like if any fingers tried to sneak in, I would almost definitely notice. It is also nice and deep, and you kind of need to dig to find anything...it's just a bag that makes me feel really secure, and it's comfortable to wear. I think those are the most important features.
