Question: Cologne or Bonn?
My answer: Cologne and Bonn.
There has been said the most about Cologne, except one thing: If you are there, there is no need to go to Düsseldorf.
But you can go by streetcar to Bonn, a nice trip of about one hour. As it was said, Bonn is mere calm and has nice walks at river Rhine, so it is an interesting contrast to Cologne.

The Bonn Welcome Card and the Cologne Welcome Card both offer discounts on attractions and transit all over the area - as well as a discount on the other card!
We have stayed in both Bonn and Cologne, and really have no preference - they're one city for all intents and purposes.
The "hour" estimate for travel between the two is wildly pessimistic - we rode trains from Muelheim where we had dinner, north of Cologne, to Venusberg where were staying, south of Bonn, in 40 minutes flat.
For dining, I recommend without reservation http://www.gilden-brauhaus.de/gilden...n-mulheim.html and www.boennsch.de.

Bonn has Bönnsch, which is a delicious variant on the Köln brew.
It's only the appellation that's controlled, not the process. In Düsseldorf, they call it alt. If you go to www.boennsch.de and hit the Das Brauhaus link, you'll see a cute little brewery manufacturing operation.
Hope this whets your appetite: http://www.boennsch.de/Speisekarte_2...rbstWinter.pdf

If you are in need of constant stimulation from a "bar scene" or something, then Bonn probably isn't for you.
If, on the other hand, you appreciate history, architecture, and music, it will do admirably.
