Stumbling upon the 1990's Danish crime drama Rejesholdet (known here - if it's known at all - as Unit One) has inspired me to to visit Denmark, combining a week at a coastal location with a night or two in Copenhagen.

At first, Bornholm took my fancy - but then I realised it's way out in the Baltic and nearer to Sweden, so may not be representative of Denmark, and that the island of Mon looks absolutely lovely with the white cliffs and turquoise sea. Also, Silkeborg with all the lakes looks good.

I'll be fine organising the Copenhagen trip as I take a lot of city breaks, but if anyone has any experience of recommendations for some rural / coastal locations, and any particular accommodation or restaurants they love, please let me know.

It will be my husband and I, maybe with his two teenage daughters, maybe not. He can drive, we both like scenery, beaches, walking and nice but simple food, I like museums and galleries but can wait until Copenhagen for culture. He can do without it all together!

Rokilde is nice enough, but we liked Langeland best, the whole thing is roughly at sea level so go now before climate change makes it smaller.

Bornholm is absolutely representative of Denmark; a large part of southern Sweden used to be part of Denmark anyway.

Coastal locations I am familiar with are on Sjælland, the coastal road 152 from Copenhagen thru Klampenborg, Tarbaek, northwards to Karen Blixen's house, to Helsingoer, to Hornbaek and Gilleje. Liseleje is a lovely place. Jutland has many beaches.

Nothing is very far in Denmark. I just spent 10 days traveling through the country and can mention several specific non-urban locations near water that would appeal to summer visitors. The Mon Klint area is one (we drove through the forest to the coast, but missed the cliffs), with a lovely rural area away from the water. The national park area ENE of Aarhus is another one. The peninsula north of Aalborg, ending in Skagen (a nice town) is another one. And there is the North Sea coast (National Park Thy) or farther south near Ribe. We passed through all these areas, but stayed in larger towns. I do not think that distance from Copenhagen should be an issue--all of Denmark is a day's drive from the capital if you use the superhighways.

I had a friend in Gudhjem, Bornholm, had a nice long visit there and loved it. It's a particularly attractive destination for someone interested in the arts as there are a number of artists & craftspeople there. But, yes, it is absolutely distinctly Danish and because it's somewhat off the beaten path is, I think, more interesting for it.

Absolutly I recomend Jutland with beautiful coastline. You must visit Thy National Park and go north towards Skagen For me it's quintessence of wild Denmark.
