Here's one unlooked at option, if going to Rome and Monaco is so important, and please take in to account that I don't neccessarily know what I'm talking about, but just happened upon these forums while researching for a vacation.

You clearly can't get a good day's fun in Rome or Monaco from Paris. But if your heart's set on visiting these places in a day, try flying to Monaco early in the morning, touring that for a day, then travel to Rome that night via train, getting a good night's sleep on the way over, and touring Rome for the next day, before casually travelling back to Paris, or even more preferable, end your vacation from Rome, and fly back from wherever you started your vacation. If this is not possible, let the other self-proclamied geniuses on the forum explain why, criticizing me in the process. But otherwise, I would certianly consider trying it out. However, as my final suggestion, stick to Paris and it's outerlying subburbs for your stay in France, for there is more than enough to take in on your travels, let alone Monaco and Rome, which really deserve their own week's worth of vacation.

It is possible, sheila, as are most things. Since so many of us are willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you really do want to try to do this, here's some advice: spend the night in Rome (& Monaco). Otherwise you will spend more time in airports & planes that day than you spend in your destination. We'll all be looking forward to your travelogue!

Sheila,

Of course you can...but to what benefit. A couple of minutes sightseeing and a rush back to the airport.

In essence it cannot be done!

US

of course one day in Rome is not exactly ideal but we had 8 hours ( not a few minutes as someone said!) and saw quite a lot. We chose not to go to the Vatican( an excuse for returning) and instead concentrated on Ancient Rome.We saw the Forum, Colosseum, Pantheon( brilliant place), Trevi fountain, Spanish Steps and the Piazza Navona. We have never included Italy in our travel plans before but, that one day has changed all that! Will be returning soon.
