Classical music in Berlin in July

I'm in Berlin from July 18-23.
The Berlin Philharmonic is shut down during that time. There are no Staatsopera performances.
Are there classical music concerts in churches like there are in other cities? Does anyone know how to find a listing?

There are indeed recitals and small concerts in churches, and they are listed in Berlin TIP magazine, see www.berlinonline.de/kultur/tip_magazin/, and also in the Thursday issue of the Berliner Zeitung. You are in town at a good time for concerts in churches, castles, country houses and town halls of the county of Brandenburg, around Berlin. The Berlin tourist information office gives out a useful brochure with detail.

I used http://www.berlinonline.de/tip/kalen...ndex.php/musik for
Zu jeder Uhrzreit, Klassik, Alle Orte, and Uberall, then Veranstaltung suchen, and had a good list for the coming two days. For your dates the list is still thin: you should look again just before you leave home. I found these. Uhr mean o clock, Schloss means castle, Zehlendorf is a former borough of Berlin, Museuminsel is the museums area in the heart of the city, and Kloster Chorin is a former monastery north of Berlin, from the photos very beautiful: please see http://www.barumlive.de/infothek/kloster1.htm/.

So, 18.07.2004
17.00 Uhr Helena Berg (Violine). Schloss Glienicke (Zehlendorf)
]
Fr, 23.07.2004
18.00 Uhr Bodil Arnesen (Sopran). Botanischer Garten (Zehlendorf)
20.00 Uhr Aida Open Air. Museumsinsel (Mitte)
21.00 Uhr Brandenburgisches Konzertorchester Eberswalde. Kloster Chorin

Please write if I can help further.

Ben Haines, this is a great start. I'll peruse the sites and decide what to hear (and report when I get back).

So far these look promising:
20.07.2004 , 8p.m.
Classical Concerts Orgelzyklus Nr.3: D'Arcy Trinkwon
Werke von Franz Liszt u.a.
Place: Berliner Dom, Am Lustgarten 10178 Berlin, Mitte,
Organiser: Dom zu Berlin, Tel. +49-30-202 69 136
website: http://www.berlinerdom.de/deutsch.htm
(I like Liszt, and I get the added bonus of time to observe the Berliner Dom.)

Then I might choose to go to this one of the nights:
from 20.07.2004 until 25.07.2004, 9p.m.
Opera Ballett Dance Creatures of Habit #1
Ch: Sommer Ulrickson
Place: Sophiensaele, Sophienstraße 18, 10178 Berlin, Mitte,
Organiser: Sophiensaele, Tel. +49 (30) 283 52 66
website: http://www.sophiensaele.com

This sounds something like avant-garde ballet. Who knows how it will be, but I think it's worth a try.

There are numerous possible klezmer concerts at Hackesches Hof, if I decide to hear one:
http://www.hackesches-hoftheater.de/

Sadly, I can't really go to any concerts on July 23, because I am catching a plane back to London that late afternoon. So I miss what looks to be a great production of Aida.

I'll continue to be on the lookout for other options. Thanks again, Ben Haines and YK.

Hi Will,

I have been a couple of times in the Sophiensaele. They have usually small avantgarde companies, but they are interesting.

Mind you, once I was there in the middle of a heatwave, and I was glad to be carrying my fan. The place doesn't have AC, and as it is a second or third floor, it can get really hot.

We stopped before the spectacle at a small gallery in the ground-floor. They had an opening and we drank a couple of white wine glasses

Another good place (if you understand german) is the Theater im Monbijoupark, also near the Hackeschen Hofe. There is a small company, and they do open-air Shakespeare. If the weather is fine, the bar will be located and opened at the Strandbar Mitte http://www.strandbar-mitte.de/
Really good fun !

Enjoy, Covadonga

These are good tips from 2004. Now I'm going back in 2006 and they still apply. Thanks Ben and YK and Cova.

I'll be able to attend concerts or theatrical events on Aug. 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31. Does anyone have any more sites or suggestions?

My daughter is also interested in non-classical, so if you have any suggestions for that, I'd appreciate them also.

The site http://www.reiseland-brandenburg.de/...sebuchung.html lists a good range of concerts, operas, and light classical evenings all around. The pages in English are much shorter (though I have not tried clicking onwards), but of course the German for Bach is Bach and for Organ is Orgel, so you have few problems. If you click on Brandenburg Landekarte you have a map you can enlarge and search. This is now commuter country, as a century ago, so you can find late local trains back home to Berlin. You want a hotel near a station for Regional trains, namely Charlottenburg, Zoo, Freidrichstrasse, Alexanderplatz and Ost (though Ost is no great place to stay). I must say, it is a delightful list.
Once you are in Berlin please buy the Berliner Zeitung each morning. It has a page or half page of events lists more detailed than any other. Weekly, I think on Thursdays, it has two or three pages of events for the whole coming week. Also in Berlin you should ask at the travel center of a Regional station for any map or pamphlet they may have of lines in Brandenburg. Or better two copies: it will become worn.
