I soon will be staying at the Citadines Apart Hotel Holburn-Covent Garden which also seems quite central (but I'm hoping not in the thick of it) and decently priced. Some years ago I stayed a block away from Trafalgar Square and I found it to be very busy and the restaurants sort of pricey.
